Job Description

Interventional cardiologists specialize in treating a range of heart and vascular conditions through a process called catheterization. The physician inserts a tube called a catheter into one of the patient's major blood vessels, usually in the thigh. Once the catheter is in place, the cardiologist can thread tiny instruments through the patient's body to the problem area, guiding it through the use of real-time X-rays or other forms of imaging. There's only a small incision, and the patient usually only requires a local anesthetic.
