Job Description

The migration engineer will undertake migrations remotely from a delivery center. The engineer may be required to accomplish the following tasks out of hours and on weekends on from time to time. Conduct a pre-audit of the server utilizing provided tools and processes. Identify any risks or issues with the server that would prevent or exclude it from being a suitable migration candidate Undertake and where required trouble shoot the migration utilizing a variety of methods into the virtual infrastructure P2V migrations using VMware Converter V2V migrations using VMware Converter Isolate the physical machine from the production network, shut down physical server via iLO Power up the newly created virtual machine Trouble shoot and rectify on boot BSOD Trouble shoot and rectify boot loader issues Trouble shoot and rectify service failure Remove non required software such as hardware specific management tools Undertake a post migration health check of the operating system to ensure that it is in a suitable state to hand back to the customer Conduct a post migration audit of the server utilizing the provided tools and processes Previous environment and experience Support/Engineering knowledge of Windows and Linux OS-es at L2 or L3 level Server hardware including NEC, Digital, HP, Compaq, IBM VMware technologies and concepts Greater than 50 previous P2V migrations of any kind At least 5 previous windows NT4.0 server P2V s (Optional) Key skills and concepts Networking basic IP knowledge, transfer rates, duplex settings, connectivity testing Server OS BSOD interpretation. i.e. what does it mean if a newly virtualized machine BSOD and what would you do to fix it. Hotfix and service pack methodologies and the differences between OS varieties Administration of NT4 and above, the differences and capabilities. Linux administration skills are highly valued Differences in filesystem between the various Windows(SP + hotfix) versions and what the ramifications are for conversion Be able to resolve kernel panic issues and ultilize linux rescue disks to fix driver/GRUB issues Demonstrated knowledge of VMware converter in all applicable migration scenarios Be able to add device drivers manually to an OS Be able to describe the steps and options that VMware converter offers during the migration process and why they might be used in certain circumstances Be able to describe the differences between Cold and Hot migration and where/when/how to use Hot migration Be able to cover off the limitations of the VMware Converter and what other options could be used to by pass. Knowledge of other migration tools, when it would be useful and what can be done with the tool that would facilitate successful Virtualisation of a physical machine, is highly advantageous Demonstrate a knowledge of additional clean up techniques that would be required post migration with VMware Converter and other 3rd Party tools. VMware technologies and concepts ESXi 4,5,6 VMware Converter 4,5,6 Networking considerations Enterprise class VI implementation SAN and server technologies VCP Certified PowerCli Scripting Knowledge
