“A few months back, my wife planned an impromptu 3 day trip to Goa over one of the long weekends. The tickets and hotel were booked in a jiffy, and all I knew was we were flying off for a short vacation. There, we did nothing more out of the ordinary than hitting the pool in the morning and then sitting on the beach, listening to the sound of water hitting the shore. It was an ‘experience’ – a day away from constant traffic in my office room, and the incessant ringing of the phones,” says Peyush Bansal, CEO, Lenskart.

A typical day in the life of Bansal, starts at 6 a.m., attending to a series of emails before breakfast, only to leave for office by 8.30 a.m. There’s no time, neither the inclination to plan a vacation. However, this short visit to Goa was an eye-opener of sorts, that left him feeling “doing this more often wouldn’t be a bad idea”.

Travel and rejuvenation are synonymous to each other, but while a 2-week vacation can put projects on hold or keep you out of touch with fast-moving developments, short vacations are one of the best strategies to achieve and optimise performance. The next wave of business evolution could start while you are not even thinking about it.

3. A True Test of Your Team

So you’ve been fearful of how your team members will be able to take care of if left on their own. Well, your short breaks away from the office will act as a litmus test of your leadership skills, showing how much capacity you’ve developed in others. After all, fear solidifies mediocrity and at times, your team’s imperfect idea is more empowering than your ‘perfect’ idea. Leaving it to your team once in a while is a good idea; if you’ve done your job, you already have the right team with the right resources to do their jobs well.

4. Re-discover You

You don’t have to be a boss, a mentor, team leader, target achiever, the go-to person, etc. for a good couple of days! Enticing, isn’t it? Studies show that the burden of playing many roles is a big-time contributor to stress. A few days off lets you set aside the many hats you wear and helps you re-discover yourself. “A thriller movie and an evening of drinks and dinner with his old friends helps my husband a great deal. Since none of his buddies belong to his industry, they don’t discuss work. Rather they go back to their school days and enjoy some hearty laughs. It works wonders for him,” says Ridhima Jaiswal whose husband is the COO of a leading e-commerce company.

And relax! Out of sight isn’t out of mind. We know you can take the workaholic away from work, but you can’t take work away from him/her! It’s not completely forbidden to check and answer those running emails and Whatsapp messages when you get the sense of being away from work for too long.
